Illuminating Your Space With Mario Tsai: An Evening With The Award-Winning Designer

Maximising the synergy between materials and the space surrounding them has been the ethos of Mario Tsai and his eponymous studio since its founding in 2014. But make no mistake, the award-winning designer’s process isn’t a haphazard one, but an exercise in meticulous research that’s guided by experimental and flexible thinking.

Come the evening of September 25, friends and family of Sol Luminaire will get the unique opportunity to pick the brains of Mario Tsai as he hosts a soiree at the LAB2.1 Gallery. For those who want to find out more, here’s a primer on all things Mario Tsai.

Mario Tsai is a visionary designer known for his minimalist yet highly functional creations that emphasise sustainability and authenticity. Born in China, Tsai began his design journey with a passion for simplicity, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Tsai’s work spans furniture and lighting design with a keen focus on materials like metal and wood; his lighting collections, like Pagoda and the Pyramid System, are particularly celebrated. His designs are marked by clean lines, subtle elegance, and an eco-conscious approach, often using fewer materials to reduce environmental impact.

His innovative perspective on lighting design is best exemplified in three of his standout creations: the Mazha lighting system, Electricity Lighting, and Bloom.

The Mazha Light System draws inspiration from the scaffolding seen in urban construction and was envisioned by Tsai as a lighting system that mimics the calm, warm glow filtering through these structures. Its core principle revolves around low voltage and modularity, allowing the straight lines—formed at precise 90-degree angles—to extend infinitely in three dimensions, creating expansive yet lightweight forms.

Another one of Tsai’s designs influenced by urban structures is the Electricity Lighting series of lamps. His pursuit of creating a fine linear light source coupled with his childhood memories of electric poles and their wires resulted in a collection of sleek, minimalist lamps encased within glass panels.

But make no mistake, as Tsai can also look to nature for his creations like the Bloom, a modular and scalable lighting solution that allows for infinite combinations. Inspired by the organic growth of flowers, Bloom offers users the freedom to build their own unique lighting installations, making it as much a personal art piece as a source of illumination. These creations highlight Tsai’s signature blend of form, function, and flexibility, all while adhering to his commitment to sustainability and simplicity.

Two other modular lighting systems you’ll see at the LAB2.1 Gallery are the Pagoda and Pyramid, both of which take cues from architectural structures. The former has a smaller silhouette inspired by the layers of the East Asian pagodas and can easily fit on your desk as a table lamp or on your floor. The latter shares a similar shape to the geometric monuments of the same name but in a larger form. Crafted from resin-immersed fabric, it looks strikingly light, unlike the desert structures that we’re all familiar with.
