In Conversation: Bespoke Retail Lighting Makeover at Alan Photo

Some shops become markers in our timelines. Alan Photo is one of them—your first camera with your own money, the counter chat before everything went online. Since 1986, they’ve kept the focus on people, knowledge, and trust.

Step inside the refreshed space and it feels different: calm on the eyes, colours read clean, details look “high-res” in real life. That’s the ISA V3®Mini downlight field at work— uniform illumination, high CRI, low glare so side-by-side tests feel fair and customers can linger without fatigue. Along the circulation and demo bays, customised LED neon light tubes add gentle wayfinding and brand tone without washing out products. It's a retail light, made human.

We speak to the General Manager himself, Alvan Tan on how he crafts a seamless retail experience for his regulars.

Alan Photo has been part of Singapore’s photo culture for decades. When did it start, and how has it evolved since?

Alan Photo was founded in 1986, and at that time, photography in Singapore was very much film based. Over the decades, we’ve seen photography move from film to digital, and now to a space where photo and video content is part of our everyday life. What hasn’t changed is our belief that equipment alone isn’t enough. Knowledge, trust, and long-term relationships matter just as much.

Do your customers influence how you stage demos and layout the floor?

Definitely. We observe how customers move, what they touch, and the questions they ask. That influences where products are placed and how we run demos. The layout and demo areas are designed around how customers actually use the space, not just how things look.

Digicams and film are back in trend. Thoughts?

A big part of it is emotion and nostalgia. People are a bit tired of everything being too perfect on smartphones, so these cameras feel more personal and real. While we don’t focus on second-hand digicams, we carry new options like Chuzhao and Kodak Charméra that capture that look with newer and more reliable technology.

You chose ISA V3® Mini downlights alongside customised LED neon light tubes for the store. What did you want the lighting to achieve, and how does it support your retail experience?

We wanted lighting that’s comfortable, accurate, and highlights products properly. Uniform illumination, high CRI, and low glare were key. ISA V3® Mini downlights deliver that. They make colours pop and details clear, which is crucial for cameras and lenses. And the light is easy on the eyes. It really helps create a space where people want to explore and spend time.

Beyond that we also worked closely on customised LED neon light tubes within the space. These were tailored specifically for the store to also add visual cues without overpowering the products. That level of customisation allows the lighting to support both function and brand expression, and it’s something we see ourselves building on further as our store evolves in the coming year.

What are your current best-sellers?

Our best-sellers span a mix of mirrorless cameras, lenses, instant cameras, and film-related products. Recently, we’ve also seen strong demand for entry-level creator gear and film cameras. What sets us apart is how hands-on we are, from proper demos and honest advice to supporting niche interests like film and new-generation digicam-style cameras. We focus on helping customers find what actually suits them, not just what’s popular.

One piece of advice for testing a camera in-store. What should someone pay attention to first?

The first thing is to understand what you really want from a camera. The most expensive model doesn’t automatically give the best pictures, it’s about finding one that fits your style, needs, and what you want to shoot.

Beyond transactions, what role do you want Alan Photo to play for the next wave of photographers?

Our vision is to build a real community around photography and videography, a space where people can learn from one another, share experiences, and get better together. We want Alan Photo to be a place that brings people together, not just a place to buy equipment.
