Lighting plays a pivotal role in transforming the ambience and vibe of our homes. Beyond mere illumination, thoughtful light planning can enhance the aesthetics, improve comfort, and even affect the mood of our cribs. But it’s also easier said than done, so we leave it up to the specialists like Sol Luminaire’s own Wei Jie, Edmund, and Sheena to do the heavy lifting for us.
“Having an efficient lighting plan will result in a more purposeful home layout, as compared to a templated, generic plan,” Edmund, Sol Luminaire’s sales manager said previously in his Meet The Team interview. Here are some of the most commonly-asked questions about light planning in a home answered by the experts.
How to start planning a home’s lighting plan?
If you were thinking of just drilling random holes into your walls to install the lights you got online, we’d advise you to think twice. Light p“I have come to experience firsthand the impact good lighting can have on a home-- it affects the entire ambience and the mood of every space." - Sheena, Assistant Gallery Managerlanning is an intricate process but it’s not as inaccessible as it needs to be. Sol Luminaire’s Assistant Gallery Manager Sheena uses software like Autocad to create and share digital lighting plans with her clients and simultaneously teaches them how to choose the right correlated colour temperature (CCT) that will fit the interior theme of their home. “I have come to experience firsthand the impact good lighting can have on a home-- it affects the entire ambience and the mood of every space." - Sheena, Assistant Gallery Manager
Once that’s all done, Sheena will then suggest all the suitable luminaires that will go well with the home, including sharing the benefits of each lighting fixure and how it’ll fit into the home.
“I have come to experience firsthand the impact good lighting can have on a home,” Sheena said when we last spoke to her. “Lighting affects the entire ambience and the mood of every space. Conversely, poor lighting can have adverse effects.”

How do I choose lights for my home?
Just because you fancy a set of luminaires you see in a catalogue or a showroom doesn’t mean it’ll be the best fit for your home. Lighting Advisor Wei Jie’s one tip for those who are shopping for lights is that brighter is not always better. Sales Manager Edmund agrees, adding that “the brightest lights can also be the flattest lights, as they do not necessarily create a homely essence for their family and loved ones.”
When he was planning the lighting layout for his new Brutalism-inspired home, Wei Jie deliberately chose lights that were as flush and seamless as possible. “In a brutalist space, the ideal choice is a compact and seamless lighting fixture,” he said. “This allows the focus to remain on the distinctive features of the space and its finishes.”
He also picked out lights like the Isa V3 Mini Trimless as they cast a narrower light beam, and his goal was to use shadowplay to enhance and elevate the space while also creating depth and dimension to the visual experience.

What should I look out for when buying lights?
Homeowners today are getting savvier by the minute and turning to overseas e-retailers to purchase lights and fixtures for their homes. However, this might be risky, as many of these products that come from abroad do not bear the Safety Mark. Edmund, sales manager at Sol Luminaire, recommends everyone to purchase only lights that have the Safety Mark to prevent any potential fire hazards fires that might occur.
With that out of the way, Edmund also recommends all homeowners who are outfitting their home with smart gadgets and smart lights to check the compatibility of all the devices before buying anything.
