Lights On: Step Inside Melissa Koh's Modern Luxe Farmhouse

It is always important to design a home that matches the lifestyle of its owners. Be it a xanadu-inspired hideaway for the busy nine-to-five workers or content creators who live and breathe their jobs 24/7 while caring for their family at the same time.

As the latter, as well as an entrepreneur and mother, Melissa C Koh shares how her new home has been designed for both practicality and aesthetics.

Describe your home in 3 words.

Peace, energy and love.

Is the design of your home based on your work and lifestyle?

Yes, we put a lot of thought into the functionality and space planning of our home. For example, we knew we needed a proper home office but we also wanted each boy to have their own room.

Hence, we segregated the living space using a partition wall to create a small but very functional office so we didn’t need to give up one of the rooms for it. Majority of our work involves photography and we shoot a lot with natural light. We made sure that our home had an abundance of it.

What's your inspiration for the new space and how is it different from your previous home?

Our previous home had more dark wood elements in it. This time, we went for lighter colours such as marble, cream and a lighter wood – mixing different textures for a more luxurious and elevated look while keeping it cosy and warm.

What’s one unique object at home that is meaningful and personal to you?

Our photo wall is a space that we love becau"The gypsum recessed lights were a no-brainer because of how unique they were and how they complement the arch in our living room"se it is filled with the best memories of our time together. We love the open shelves that allow us to constantly change up, style and update the area.  "The gypsum recessed lights were a no-brainer because of how unique they were and how they complement the arch in our living room"

Do you have a favourite room?

James loves the dry kitchen because it’s where we prepare food, have a quick breakfast and hearty conversations together. I love the master bathroom because that’s where I spend a lot of “me time”, unwinding with a hot bath and doing my skincare ritual.

How did you choose your lights?

The gypsum recessed lights were a no-brainer because of how unique they were and how they complement the arch in our living room, along with all the curved edges of our furniture. From a functionality standpoint, we worked closely with Sol Luminaire and Tid Plus to select lighting for each area in the house.

What are some elements you were looking for in the luminaires?

Design, functionality, dim-to-warm capability and smart home compatibility.

Anything interesting you learnt about lights that you never knew before?

I was quite intrigued by how much of a difference that the right lighting can make when you illuminate artwork or try to create a certain mood or ambience in your home.

Complete this sentence: ‘A home is ...’

A home is an extension and expression of who we are. Every single detail matters.
