Monochromatic homes often get a bad rap for being dull and lifeless, but Darren Chu and his partner set out to prove otherwise. With Darren’s expertise as a Lighting Advisor at the newly launched Rooms by Sol Luminaire and his partner’s keen eye as an interior designer, they transformed their vision into a home that is anything but ordinary. In this edition of Meet The Team, Darren offers a glimpse into their design journey, detailing the thoughtful lighting choices, creative planning, and seamless blend of form and function that brought their warm and dynamic family space from dream to reality.

I wanted to cr"Dark, simple, minimal & consistent"eate a smooth flow into my home based on my family’s lifestyle, integrating different materials throughout the space. Dark, simple, minimal & consistent, utilising glass blocks allows natural sunlight to penetrate and still retain privacy. "Dark, simple, minimal & consistent"
Mono, gloomy & bare.
My favourite spot would be my unusual dining table, which allows me to host friends and family with ease. With all the decorative features surrounding it—like the metal dining table itself, the soft curves of the Halo Gypsum, and the iconic Boba Chain pendant adding a relaxed yet stylish touch—it truly serves as the centre point of the entire house.
The process was simple as we both are in the trade and have similar preferences in terms of materials. We know our needs and wants allowing us to tackle any areas being left out. The main concern was ensuring how our little one would blend into the space as she grew. Designing our home as a lighting advisor & interior designer allowed us to venture into our creativity based on our expertise, ensuring all requirements were met.
With all the perks like the low Unified Glare Rating, dim-to-warm function, and minute size, I knew the Isa V3 Mini was the one. And with the narrow beam angle, it was easier to add more depth within the space.
The combination of reflective metal and translucent glass blocks creates an intriguing interplay of light. The brushed metal"Creates an intriguing interplay of light" surfaces reflect the glow from the Halo Gypsum and the cove lighting above, adding depth and movement to the space. Meanwhile, the Ornate+ glass blocks refract light from the opposite side of the room, casting subtle patterns and creating a soft, diffused glow. Balancing these effects ensured that the lighting not only highlights the textures but also enhances the unique qualities of each material. "Creates an intriguing interplay of light"

I believe our Magnetite & Pulp series would be eye-catching to homeowners & designers. Personally, I love the Boba Chain and that’s why I have it in my home as well. I believe functionality & form are what everyone is trying to achieve, but lighting preferences can be quite subjective to everyone.
When crafting lighting plans, I focus on making the most of each luminaire's beam angle to highlight the materials in the design. The flow of the space also plays a big role in where I place the lights. Plus, understanding each client’s lifestyle is key to ensuring the lighting suits how they live and use the space.
Adding soft finishes with fabrics, rugs, and curtains softens the mood. And most importantly: cove lighting.
