Since 2009, he’s led Icon Interior as a design-and-build studio that treats the floor plan as the starting point — circulation drawn with care, storage sized to habit and proportions tuned before any “look” is applied.
Light comes in early, not as décor but as architecture. Rooms hold together at different hours: soft, low-glare fields for living and scenes that shift without calling attention to the systems behind them. In compact Singapore flats this matters — slimmer luminaires calm the ceiling, warm, consistent tone keeps surfaces honest and details are meant to last, not a fad.
In the conversation that follows, Max walks through the method—how constraints shape better layouts, why restraint outperforms add-ons, and when smart control earns its keep.

How long has Icon Interior been around? How long have you been a Creative Director? What does this role entail?
Icon Interior was established in 2009, and I have been serving as the Creative & Design Director since its inception. With 22 years of experience, my role involves overseeing the overall creative direction of the studio. From conceptual design and spatial planning to material selection and detailing. I also work closely with clients, consultants and suppliers to ensure each project is thoughtfully designed and executed.
Describe Icon Interior to a homeowner who’s new to the design firm.
Icon Interior is a design-and-build interior studio that focuses on creating homes that are functional and timeless. We believe in the philosophy of “less is more”, where good design is not about excess but an attention to detail.

Having been a designer for 22 years, tell us the toughest brief you’ve solved.
The challenge was to create a sense of openness without compromising functionality. The creative process involved rethinking circulation, using concealed storage, and carefully layering lighting to enhance depth. The most rewarding part was seeing how thoughtful planning and detailing transformed a constrained space into a home that felt spacious and effortless.

Your design non-negotiables.
Clean lines, good proportions, thoughtful lighting, and attention to detail are my non-negotiables. Design must always serve the space and the homeowner’s lifestyle, not trends alone.
One interesting trend/product that you could see being timeless in the next 3–5 years.

What’s one common misconception homeowners have?
Good design is about adding more features or expensive elements. In reality, good design is about restraint. Sometimes, removing unnecessary elements creates a more refined space.
